krystal, moving on to chuck hagel. he's been described as you know as a homophobic anti-semitic lover of hamas. doesn't this come down to where he said this about the pentagon. it is bloated and needs to be pared down. that's his greatest sin isn't it? >> that is one of them. i think the other was questioning the iraq war and eventually coming out and opposing the iraq war and saying after he cast the vote in favor of the iraq war, coming back and saying you know what? this was the wrong move. that created a lot of animosity. and we have seen criticism from the left. i do want to see a confirmation process. i want to know how he'll behave towards lbgt members of the military. >> and he has already apologized for those statements. >> absolutely. absolutely. but the charges that -- i mean, the thing that has really been ludicrous is because he hasn't been with mccain and lieberman an every vote in israel, not only is his anti-israel, he's anti-semitic. i think that shuts down any debate on the topic. >> had a change of h

why is he fighting hagel over vietnam? >> well, it's interesting because he's ostensibly fighting with him over iraq, but it immediately becomes over vietnam. he seems to be mad that hagel took issue with him about iraq and compared it to vietnam being the big blunder, which, of course, mccain and hagel both served in. you know, when mccain talks about iraq, all he wants to talk about is from the surge on. it's as if everything before that didn't happen and didn't count, and we can still debate whether the surge worked or not, but the bigger issue is whether iraq was as bad as vietnam, and he doesn't want to have that argument. >> here is mccain sinking his teeth into hagel's ankle here, and he wouldn't let go on the question of the iraq surge. again, what david said. let's listen again, back again to the old war. >> were you correct or incorrect when you said that the surge would be the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since vietnam? were you correct or incorrect? >> my -- >> yes or no. >> my referenc

chuck hagel watching this. the president is not going to get forced to pull back on this. >> he got re-elected and he wants his guy. the guy he wants is someone he's sympa sympatico with. he'll have to deal with these republicans who have this personal vendetta against him. he does carry this baggage. and i think these performance issues have not helped. his performance in his confirmation hearing did not make people inside the white house more confident about him. but, again, second term presidents, their level of confidence, who they want for the reasons they want them carry the day. >> john mccain, we saw all sides of him this week. there was the john mccain who told ted cruz, hey, you've gone too far. then there was the john mccain who went and decided to filibuster his former friend. and then there was the john mccain who was basically totally honest about why he's really -- he didn't say why he was opposing him, but explained why so many republican senators -- >> and it undercuts the benghazi arguments. i

the president wants chuck hagel to be in that position. hagel long ago proved he's got the harlt. i do recognize their tactics. they're the same ones they used to push the war in iraq. they say they don't like something he said, hagel did, 14 years ago about a gay man being put up for ambassador. i don't like it either, but, a, it was 14 years ago, and, b, i don't think it's got anything to do with why the hawks are opposing him. since when is the right wing of this country so caring for gay rights? as bill clinton would say, give me a break. and this isn't about israel's security any more than it's about ours. the right wants a hawk at defense for all occasions. someone with an itchy trigger finger who has always got a country lined up to go to war with, iraq, afghanistan, iraq again, libya, syria, iran. sorry, the guy you lined up to be president would have picked a person you'd want as defense chief, a real genuine hawk, but mitt romney lost, didn't he? he lost. so keep firing off those anti-hagel columns and editorials, my right wing brothers, and don't worry, you won't get hu
